Apps, widget & extension

The iPhone and Android apps, the shopping-list widget, the browser extension, and cooking without a connection.

The iPhone and Android apps

Get iwant2eat on the App Store or on Google Play, then sign in with your account — email, Google, Facebook or Apple. Everything is already there: the app and the website are the same iwant2eat, kept in sync.

The app adds what only a phone can do:

  • Save from any app — tap Share in Safari, Chrome, YouTube, TikTok, Facebook or anywhere you can share a link or text, and choose iwant2eat.
  • Your shopping list on the home screen — the widget below.
  • Camera and barcode — photograph recipes, scan products and receipts, and read barcodes for the price history.
  • Hands-free cooking — voice control in cooking mode.

The shopping-list widget

Put the household shopping list on your home screen and see what to buy without opening anything. Touch and hold an empty spot on the home screen, add a widget, and choose iwant2eat. On iPhone it comes in three sizes; on Android, drag its edges to make it as big as you like.

  • Grouped by store, with the amount and who added each item. Tap the widget to open the full list.
  • It keeps itself up to date — every time the list changes in the app, and on its own every half hour, so changes made on someone else's phone or your computer reach it too.
  • Long lists — on iPhone a long list turns its pages by itself (a 1/3 badge shows where you are); on Android it scrolls.

Just installed or reinstalled the app and the widget says there's nothing to buy? Open the app once — that's when the widget gets your list.

Browser extension

On a computer, the iwant2eat extension saves the recipe page you're reading with one click — no copy and paste. It works in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc, Opera and Firefox, including Firefox for Android. Install it from the extension page.

  1. Install the extension and pin its icon to the toolbar.
  2. Make sure you're signed in to iwant2eat.com in the same browser — the extension uses that session.
  3. On any recipe page, click the iwant2eat icon → Save this recipe. The popup shows the progress, and the recipe is in your vault within seconds.
  • Keyboard shortcut — save without opening the popup at all; set the key combination on your browser's extension-shortcuts page.
  • Instagram and Facebook — the extension reads the post you're looking at while you're signed in, which is the only way to save an Instagram reel's recipe.
  • No junk — if a page holds no recipe (a login wall, a post without one), the attempt is cleaned up instead of cluttering your vault.
  • Private — it sends only the page you choose to save. It doesn't read other tabs, run in the background, show ads or track you. Details on the extension privacy page.

Install the website

Rather not install an app? The website installs to your home screen or desktop like one, and opens full-screen:

  • Android, or Chrome and Edge on a computer — press Install on the Install iwant2eat banner, or choose Install app in the browser menu.
  • iPhone or iPad — open iwant2eat.com in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen.

Without a connection

A supermarket basement or a cabin without Wi-Fi shouldn't take tonight's recipe with it. Recipes you've opened recently stay readable offline.

To have everything on a phone, turn on Account → Data → Offline sync → Auto-sync recipes to this device. Your recipes, shopping list and meal plan are kept on the phone and readable without a connection; Open offline viewer shows them. Adding and editing still need a connection — changes are made in the live app.
