Account & your data

Preferences, language and look, AI budget, backups and privacy — and how the subscription works.

The Account page

Tap your picture in the top-right corner → Account Settings. The page is split into sections you can fold open:

  • 👤 Main — your photo and name, the email addresses you send recipes from, your password, and household members.
  • 👥 Friends — see Friends.
  • 🍳 Cooking preferences — units and conversions.
  • 🎨 UI preferences — how recipes and the list look.
  • ⚙️ Misc — attention words, missing amounts, store detection.
  • 💾 Data — AI budget, backups, Trash, offline sync and deleting your account.

Language and look

  • Language — the menu under your picture → 🌐. iwant2eat speaks 31 languages, and your choice is also the language recipes are translated into.
  • Theme — the same menu → Themes: Market, Editorial, Modern or the dark Midnight. The choice follows you to every device.
  • Collection themes — under UI preferences → Collection themes you can design looks for your collections (written as CSS colours and fonts) and apply one with the pencil on a collection. When you share that collection, others see it exactly as you styled it.

Cooking preferences

Set once, applied to every recipe — the original text is never changed:

  • Units — original, metric or imperial.
  • Temperature — °C, °F, matching your units, or as written.
  • Yeast — fresh, active dry or instant, converted by weight so the dough rises the same.
  • Garlic — fresh cloves, granulated or powder.
  • Vinegar — the strength you keep at home, from 5% to 70% essence; the water is adjusted so the dish comes out the same.
  • Curing salt — nitrite salt or Prague Powder #1, at the same nitrite dose.

How recipes and the list look

  • Recipe formatting — size, font, colour, background, bold, italic or underline for each part of a recipe: the text, quantities, ingredient names, times, temperatures, notes and the original text. Big bold quantities across the kitchen? Done. Reset custom formatting undoes it all.
  • Shopping list formatting — the same for the list, the suggestion chips and Recently bought.
  • Keep screen awake — on a phone, the screen doesn't dim or lock while a recipe or the shopping list is open. On by default.

Formatting is saved on each device, so the kitchen tablet can look different from your phone.

Attention words, missing amounts, store detection

  • Attention words — ingredients you need to watch for: shellfish, peanuts, alcohol, pork. Whenever one of them (or its translation) appears in a recipe, a warning chip shows at the top of the recipe, and Ask AI keeps them in mind. The match is made by AI, so double-check the ingredients when it really matters.
  • Ingredients with no amount — leave them blank (nothing is invented), or fill in a typical amount marked est.
  • Store detection — lets the shopping list notice which store you're in. If you once blocked location for iwant2eat, re-enable it here.

AI budget

Reading recipes, translating them, Ask AI, scans and meal plans all use AI. Every account has a daily AI budget — plenty for normal use, and capped so that one very busy day can't run away. Account → Data → AI budget lists every AI call with what it was for and what it cost.

Backups and your data

  • Export everything — Account → Data → Export recipes (on a computer) packs your whole vault — ingredients, steps, photos, tags, notes and nutrition — into one .i2e file. It's a plain, documented format (a ZIP with JSON inside), readable even without iwant2eat.
  • Restore or merge — Import recipes takes an .i2e file and adds what's in it; nothing you already have is touched. The same page imports Paprika and Word files.
  • Single recipes print, or export to PDF and Word, from the ⤓ menu on the recipe.
  • Trash — deleted recipes wait in Account → Data → Trash until you restore them or delete them for good.
  • Delete your account — Account → Data → Delete account permanently removes the account and everything in it: recipes, lists, plans and saved prices. You type a word to confirm; it can't be undone. A subscription paid on the website is cancelled with it; one bought through the App Store is handled by Apple, so cancel it there first.

Privacy

Your recipes are visible only to you, your household members and whoever you choose to share a link with. Nothing is public unless you share it, nothing is indexed by search engines, and your recipes are never used to train AI models. Read the privacy policy and how to delete your data.

Subscription

Every new account starts with a 14-day free trial with everything included — no card needed.

After that it's $2.99 a month or $20 a year (about $1.67 a month). One subscription unlocks everything — unlimited recipes, Ask AI, email-in, translation, the meal plan and the shopping list — for you and up to five household members. See Pricing.

  • Subscribe, switch plans or cancel — the menu under your picture → Manage Subscription. Cancelling takes two clicks in the billing portal; no emails, no phone calls.
  • Subscribed in the iPhone app? Apple handles that billing: on your iPhone, Settings → your name → Subscriptions.

In the app you subscribe through the App Store: the menu under your picture → Manage Subscription. Billing, plan changes and cancelling are handled by Apple — on your iPhone, Settings → your name → Subscriptions.

When a trial or a subscription ends, nothing is deleted: your recipes stay yours to open, cook from, edit, print and export, free. You can still add one recipe a week; subscribing again brings back unlimited recipes and Ask AI.
